Since plagiarism has recently been in the news, I have been asked several times to define its meaning.
What is plagiarism? In teaching writing, I discuss this topic at length because many of my students have been taught incorrectly or not at all. It is not enough to change a few words around, or to re-order sentences. Even if most of the words are different, plagiarism exists if the rhythm and the essential order of similar thoughts remains the same.
Of course writers can and often should refer to others' writing to support or clarify their own points. Nevertheless, when using a source text, it is important not to copy any part of it. I tell my students to set the source text out of sight, then simply tell in their own words what the original is about, as though talking with a friend. They must then double-check to make sure that they have not accidentally included a phrase or two that they unconsciously memorized.
Putting someone else's ideas in one's own words is called paraphrasing. However, even when paraphrasing, the originator of the information must be given credit. If the original wording is exceptional and powerfully phrased, you can use direct quotations. That said, quoting large blocks of text is also a no-no in many cases, since Fair Use laws limit the amount of copyrighted material that can be used without paying the rights holder.
Plagiarism is best understood by looking at examples:
Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is one of the most well-known speeches in American history. It is in the public domain, meaning that it is no longer under copyright, and can be quoted in full without paying anyone royalties. That does not mean, however, that any part of the Address can be used without attributing the words to Lincoln. To do otherwise would be to take credit for his powers of composition and expression. The same is the case for any other writer, from Plato to Danielle Steel to your roommate.

In the last paragraph, he emphasized that the cemetery at Gettysburg could not be dedicated, or “consecrated,” or “hallowed,” beyond what the men did who “struggled” there. Instead, he said, we best honor them and the ground on which they died, by carrying on their “unfinished work.” What was this work? The preservation of freedom for all. The determination to preserve a nation, “under God,” with a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.” To ensure that such a nation and such a government “shall not perish from the earth.” According to the writer Garry Wills, in Lincoln’s brief address at Gettysburg, “The power of words has rarely been given a more compelling demonstration.”
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is recognizable and well-known, and therefore hard to plagiarize without attracting attention. However, the same principle applies to anyone's writing. If you didn't write it, don't use it without giving credit. Writing takes effort and thought and time. Trying to save energy by lifting someone else's words is not just lazy: it's dishonest.
